Galaxy M55 5G: More Power, Faster Charging, But Are There Catches?

 TL;DR

  • The Samsung Galaxy M55 5G has launched in Brazil.
  • The phone has a number of changes compared to the Galaxy A55 5G, such as 45W charging, a 50MP selfie camera, and more base storage.
  • Samsung’s phone also brings lower resolution secondary cameras, while there’s no mention of an IP rating.

Samsung just released the Galaxy M55 5G, hot on the heels of the A55 5G. If the A55 wasn't your thing, this new M55 might be more your speed.

There are a few key differences between the two phones. The M55 ditches the Exynos chip in the A55 for a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. This isn't a clear winner - the Snapdragon has a newer, supposedly more powerful CPU, but the A55's Exynos has an AMD GPU that's looking pretty good for the mid-range market.

Both phones have a 5,000mAh battery, but the M55 steps up the charging game with 45W wired charging compared to the A55's 25W. That means you can ditch the charger for a shorter time - potentially going from zero to hero in under an hour, compared to the A55's 85-minute charge time.

What else does the Galaxy M55 5G offer?

  • Storage: In Brazil, the M55 5G only comes in a hefty 8GB RAM and 256GB storage option, unlike the A55's base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. But hey, at least you can add a microSD card to either phone for more space.
  • Cameras: Selfie lovers, rejoice! The M55 5G boasts a whopping 50MP front camera, a big jump from the A55's 32MP one. However, that doesn't guarantee automatically better selfies. On the flip side, the M55 5G has a 50MP main rear camera with two lower-resolution companions (8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro) compared to the A55's 50MP main camera with a stronger supporting cast (12MP ultrawide and 5MP macro). So, it seems like you might have to choose between a better selfie camera or more versatility with the back cameras.
  • Other features: Both phones offer a big 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED screen (but only Full HD resolution), a fingerprint sensor under the display, and Samsung's latest One UI 6.1 software on top of Android 14. That's impressive! What the M55 5G seems to be missing is the A55's IP67 dust and water resistance rating, which would be a bummer.

As for the price, the M55 5G is currently retailing in Brazil for around $541, which is a bit lower than its original price tag of $641. There's no official news on a wider release yet, but there are hints it might come to India. However, if you're in the US, don't get your hopes up - the Galaxy M series hasn't made it there yet.
