It's the most important piece of hardware, and keeping it cool is essential for smooth performance. To make sure your CPU isn't overheating, you can monitor its temperature. While there are ways to check this, you'll need to download a free app to get real-time readings.
How to check CPU temp on Windows
Keeping your PC running cool is important, especially if you push it with demanding tasks. A great way to monitor your CPU temperature is with a program like Core Temp. It's totally free and super easy to use. Just download it, install it, and boom! You'll see your CPU's temperature, along with other info like its model and current speed.
There are other options like HWMonitor that offer more details, but they can be overwhelming if you're not a tech whiz. Core Temp is my go-to because it's lightweight and shows you the essentials. Plus, it works with pretty much any processor, whether you're team AMD or Intel.
Of course, if you're feeling adventurous and have an Intel or AMD CPU, there are brand-specific options too. Intel XTU lets you fine-tune your PC's performance while keeping an eye on the temperature. AMD Ryzen Master does the same thing for AMD processors. Just be careful when messing with these settings, they can affect your CPU's health if you don't know what you're doing.
How to check CPU temp on Mac
Just like on Windows, there isn't a built-in tool on Macs to monitor your CPU temperature. To keep an eye on it, you'll need a third-party app.
One of the best options for Mac users is TG Pro. This app is not only approved by Apple, but it also allows you to adjust your Mac's fan speed to manage the temperature.
You can download TG Pro from their website. Once it's installed, you'll be greeted with a window full of information. It might not be as user-friendly as Core Temp (which is great for Windows), but it gets the job done. The only drawback is the price tag of $29.99, although they often have sales where you can snag it for $10.
An important advantage of TG Pro is that it lets you control the fan speed (how fast the fans spin). This means you can cool down your CPU if it gets too hot. However, be cautious when adjusting these settings. Picking the wrong ones could lead to your CPU overheating and causing problems with your Mac.
How hot should my CPU be?
CPUs don't come with universal temperature limits. It depends on the specific model you have. That said, most CPUs can handle bursts of heat up to 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) during demanding tasks without problems. Newer CPUs can even push that limit to 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) without much performance drop.
But just because a CPU can technically handle high temperatures doesn't mean it's ideal. Ideally, you want your CPU to stay around 40-45 degrees Celsius (104-113 degrees Fahrenheit) when your computer is just idling. Running at high temperatures for extended periods can wear down your CPU and shorten its lifespan. So keeping an eye on your CPU's temperature is a smart move. That way, you can take steps to cool it down if needed.
If your CPU is running hot, there are ways to bring those temperatures down. You can consider installing a bigger heatsink, upgrading your cooling system with faster fans for better airflow, or even water cooling (for desktop computers).
