How to Hide YouTube Shorts From Your Feed

How to Hide YouTube Shorts From Your Feed

Let's face it, YouTube Shorts are everywhere these days. Whether you love them or find them annoying, there's no escaping them. But fear not, if those endless short clips are taking over your feed and shrinking your attention span, there are ways to fight back! YouTube itself lets you hide them for a while, but if you want them gone for good, you might need some extra help from browser extensions.

Tell YouTube you are not interested in Shorts

Want to ditch YouTube Shorts on your Chrome browser? You can click the "X (Not Interested)" button next to them. But there's a catch: this only works for a month, and Shorts will be back to haunt you. Plus, it's just for desktops - your phone's YouTube app is fair game for Shorts.

And even if you banish them from the homepage, they might pop up in the sidebar while you're watching something else. You can tell YouTube you're "Not Interested" in those specific ones, but unfortunately, you can't completely shut the Shorts door.

Making YouTube Shorts disappear on the mobile apps

While you can't completely ditch shorts in the iOS and Android apps, there is a way to tame the recommendation beast. By tapping the three dots on any Short and selecting "Not interested," you can train the algorithm to show you fewer of those types of videos. You can also report shorts you find offensive by tapping "Report" and sending feedback. However, be warned, these methods might not work perfectly. It can feel like trying to hold back a fire hose at times! Just keep reporting and selecting "Not interested" and eventually you should start seeing fewer shorts you dislike.

Block YouTube Shorts with extensions

Frustrated with YouTube Shorts cluttering your feed? Don't worry, you're not stuck with them! While your browser might not offer much control on its own (especially if it's not Chrome), there are some handy extensions that can help.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • For ultimate control: ShortsBlocker (Chrome and Firefox) is a superhero when it comes to hiding Shorts. It makes them vanish from your home page, subscriptions, search results – basically anywhere you might encounter them on YouTube.

  • More like a pick-and-choose situation? Unhook (Chrome, Firefox, and Edge) lets you customize your YouTube experience. You can choose to hide Shorts alongside other distractions like comments or trending videos.

  • Want to keep some Shorts but ditch others? YouTube Shorts Blocker (Chrome) is your friend. It hides Shorts from your usual spots but also allows you to create a "whitelist" of channels whose Shorts you still want to see. Plus, it can even convert Shorts into regular videos for easier viewing.

  • Using Safari? BlockYT has your back. This extension works on Safari for both computers and iPhones/iPads, blocking Shorts, comments, and recommendations for a cleaner YouTube experience.

Just a heads-up, these extensions are created by folks outside of YouTube, so use them with a bit of caution. Keep an eye out for any updates or bug fixes they might need.
