How to Set Up Voicemail on Your iPhone 2024

This weekend, I realized a bunch of my friends don't even have voicemail set up! It got me thinking - did I even have a custom greeting? Thankfully, setting up voicemail on an iPhone is super easy, so no worries there.

How to set up voicemail on iPhone

Open your phone app – it's the green phone icon on your home screen. This will bring you to a screen with a dial pad, along with tabs for your recent calls, contacts, and favorites. Look for a "Voicemail" button in the bottom right corner (it's usually on the bottom row of apps). Tap that button to access your voicemail. Keep in mind that app icons can be customized, so yours might look different from mine. Mine happens to be pink, but you can change the look of yours by following these steps outlined here.)

If you haven't set up voicemail yet, you'll see a message prompting you to create a password and greeting. Just tap "Set Up Now" and follow the on-screen instructions to choose a password. Don't worry, you can change both the password and greeting later on – we'll cover that in a bit

Just finished setting up your voicemail and password? Great! You'll now see a screen to record your greeting. Already have voicemail? No problem! Access this screen by tapping "Greeting" in the top right corner.

Here's where you choose: Let a pre-recorded message handle things, or create your own. The default option is an automated voice explaining you're unavailable. Want something more personal? Choose "Custom" and record whatever message you like!

If you choose 'custom,' you get more control. Buttons like 'play,' 'stop,' and 'record' will appear. Hitting 'record' will create a new message, replacing the old one. But don't worry, you can always listen to the old recording by pressing 'play' before you record a new one.

Other iPhone voicemail settings

Forget just picking a greeting and password! Your iPhone's voicemail can do a whole lot more. Head to Settings, then Phone, and scroll down past the call settings. Here's where the fun starts: turn on Live Voicemail and it'll transcribe your messages, letting you read them instead of listening. You can even set your phone to automatically send unknown callers straight to voicemail, with their call silenced on your end so you're not disturbed.

Don't worry if you're not a fan of the voicemail password you chose during setup. You can easily change it later! Just scroll all the way down the list of voicemail options, and you'll find the one for changing your password.
