iOS 18 could finally help iPhones catch up to Pixel's Recorder app

 TL;DR

  • iOS 18 will reportedly include a new AI-powered audio transcription and summarization feature that works across Apple Notes and Voice Memos.
  • The feature will likely be offered on iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, too, which Apple will officially preview during WWDC24’s opening keynote.

Apple has been dropping hints that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a major focus in the upcoming iOS 18 update. While we won't get a full look at the new features until next month's official reveal, rumors suggest some exciting possibilities.

According to a recent report, iOS 18 might integrate AI directly into the Notes and Voice Memos apps. This would allow iPhone users to automatically transcribe and summarize their voice recordings. Imagine being able to see a written transcript appear as you record a lecture or meeting! This AI feature would be similar to the Recorder app on Google's Pixel 8 Pro, and could even generate a summary that highlights the most important points of your recording.

Imagine college students no longer needing extra apps to record lectures and take notes – that's the promise of iOS 18. There might be some mistakes in the automatic transcript, but the original recording will always be there for reference, just like with iMessage voice messages where you can choose to listen or read the text.

This AI upgrade in Apple Notes and Voice Memos for iOS 18 will likely extend to iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 as well. It's possible that Apple might limit this feature to newer devices since it might rely on the on-device Neural Engine. But whatever the case, we'll know for sure in just four weeks at WWDC24!
