Samsung's weird Watch Ultra design could be a positive compromise

Samsung is gearing up for its next product launch, and we’re anticipating the arrival of a new flagship smartwatch. Recently leaked renders of the Galaxy Watch "Ultra" have surfaced, showcasing a design that stands out from anything Samsung has previously released. This new model features a bold "Ultra" aesthetic with a distinctive look. Personally, I love the design, but opinions seem divided.

It's an unexpected move, especially given the growing excitement for a square Samsung watch that could directly compete with the Apple Watch Ultra. However, I believe that the hybrid design, blending square and circular elements, has more potential than sticking to either shape alone.

Ultra volume, ultra everywhere else?

Although Samsung has experience with square watches, maintaining the core experience of its flagship wearables remains a priority for the company. This means preserving the circular lens with the beloved rotating bezel and ensuring a consistent Wear OS interface across the Galaxy Watch lineup. This approach helps both new users and long-time Galaxy Watch fans feel right at home.

However, there are limits to how similar different generations of devices can be. As smartwatch design evolves and packaging improves, it becomes increasingly challenging to find space within the compact body of a smartwatch. This is evident in Samsung's current circular design, as the Galaxy Watch 6 series doesn't offer significant improvements over the Galaxy Watch 4 released two years ago. The refined design now seems to be delivering diminishing returns.

The Ultra model introduces a controversial solution: a stepped, squared-off frame that adds noticeable bulk beneath its circular dial. While it appears chunky and rugged, this design theoretically provides Samsung with more internal space without completely abandoning its trusted formula.

While chunky and brutish, this design theoretically allows Samsung more room to innovate without ditching its trusted formula.

The room can be used for improvements or new features, giving Samsung more flexibility with its packaging options.

Based on current rumors, it’s unclear if Samsung will fully utilize this design. However, there's an immediately noticeable third "Quick Button" between the traditional two-key setup, which could offer programmable functionality similar to the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action Button. On the opposite side, deep dual speaker slits hint at better audio for on-device alerts and calls. A watch strap that sits flush with the squared body adds to its imposing aesthetic. Internally, there’s more space for additional or upgraded hardware or smarter cooling for better-performing chipsets.

If the Ultra suffix is here to stay, it’s expected to offer buyers even more in the future. This body shape provides a new platform for further development.
